Our Story

Spruce Interiors was created when Dana Spiwak, owner of Vertical Blinds Factory in Chicago, “retired” to stay home with her three young boys. Dana has a great passion for her work, so it wasn’t long before she began assisting family and friends with their window coverings in Chicago’s Northern Suburbs. Through these experiences, she found a void in the marketplace when shopping for window treatments. It was difficult to find a hands-on, customer focused process when choosing that perfect window treatment without high pressure sales. Thus, Spruce Interiors was born. Dana’s vision of walking into your home, understanding who you are and what you want (or figuring out what you want together) became the cornerstone of her success and repeat customers.

Additionally, it was important for Dana to pair her strong technical abilities and knack for finding practical solutions to difficult windows with current trends and attractive designs. With that in mind, Dana sought out top design professionals in the North Shore to assist on a variety of projects. Whether you are decorating an entire room, entire house, or simply a window or two, we invite you to set up an appointment with our design team “spruce up your space, from concept to completion”.

Dana Spiwak

Co-Owner

Dana is project manager of residential jobs at Spruce Interiors. Dana Spiwak has been in the custom window treatment business for the past 19 years. She began her journey by joining her family business. It was there that she learned her trade from top to bottom and honed her skills with “on the job” training. She then ventured out on her own as co-owner of Vertical Blinds Factory in Lincoln Park, where she was not only respected for her technique, but loved for her care and commitment to her customers. After commuting to the city from her Deerfield home that she shares with her husband and three boys, she has chosen to put her expertise to work in the suburbs and give up that commute! Dana’s passion for her work is infectious. She makes every appointment fun and low stress, while priding herself on finding the most stylish and functional window coverings.

Laura Bluman

Co-Owner

Laura is project manager of commercial jobs, operations, and marketing at Spruce Interiors. Laura Bluman graduated from Tulane University’s Freeman School of Business in 1990. After a successful media career in Chicago and New York, she decided to stay home with her children full-time. While running carpools and volunteering, Laura met Dana and developed a close friendship, and a common bond in their desire for a work-life balance. When her children became of school age, she began pursuing various business opportunities, which ultimately led to endless conversations with Dana. Laura found that her innate abilities and professional experience prepared her to take on the role of co-owner at Spruce Interiors. She is loving the process of “sprucing up”.
